My Little Self-Watering Herb Garden
Do you always wish to have a little edible garden at home, yet have too little time to manage them? Now I have a solution for you - the self-watering herb garden. You can leave it up to a week without watering them as long as you refill the water reservoir before you pack your back for a week long vacation. It is almost free because we are recycling plastic water or soda bottle to make this beautiful artwork.
This is how my little herb garden looks like. They are not only adorable, they can lift your culinary skill to the next level. I have some mint, spring onion, aloe-vera and the latest, cilantro. Now, I'm going to show you the step-by-step to make your own self-watering herb pot.
These are the tools you need. Plastic bottle, cutter, old rug, old sock.
First, cut the bottle into two.
Then slip the string into the bottle, leaving half of the string and recap the bottle loosely. The function of the string is to supply water to the soil. I used an old cotton rug and cut into a strip for this purpose.
Cover the bottle with an old sock then secure it with a string and cut the excess. This is to prevent sunlight that encourage algae growth at the root which will compete with the root for oxygen.
Pull the string out.
Now fill the container with soil.
This round, I'm trying to plant some cilantro which I had already eaten the leaves and left the roots behind.
Water the plant from the top for the first time to make sure the soil is all wet.
Fill the reservoir with water. Refill whenever necessary. I refill the reservoir about once a week.
Now the plant is ready for the herb garden. You can use this pot for seedling purpose too. Happy trying.
