To name a few, they are covered with:
pesticides residue
growth hormones
synthetic wax ( to extend their shelf life during transportation)
heavy metal (from soil)
pollutants from haze/ acid rain
dirt (most produce are grown on soil)
germs (E.coli, Salmonella, therefore, organic produce is non-exempted)
2. Could they cause any health problem?
Long term exposure to these contaminants can lead to toxicological effect on our bodies, especially our endocrine and neurological health. Pesticides are linked to causing cancer, birth defect, brain development disruption, asthma, eczema and more.
3. I wash my fruits and vegetables with water before eating, isn't it enough?
Not all pesticides and contaminants are water soluble, therefore washing with water alone does not wash away all the pesticides and contaminants effectively. Moreover, fruits and vegetable are usually coated with synthetic wax to prolong their shelf-life, thus make it even harder to remove these contaminants.
